What is the difference between a straight-through cable and an adapter cable?

A straight-through cable carries every conductor from pin N on one end to pin N on the other end — same connector type, same gender, same pinout. An adapter cable changes one or more of these dimensions: gender (M-M or F-F gender changer), connector type (DB9 to DB15 converter), pinout (RS-232 crossover, null-modem), or even protocol (RS-232 to RS-485 with active translator chip). Adapter cables are essential when bridging legacy and modern equipment, mixing different vendors' instruments in one test station, or matching a host PC to a non-standard piece of laboratory or production hardware.

Yes — we build both passive crossover cables (null-modem RS-232 with TX/RX swapped, CTS/RTS handshake re-wired) and active converter cables that include an inline molded module with an RS-232 / RS-485 / RS-422 transceiver chip. The active versions are powered from the host port or a USB pigtail. Cable length up to 30 m for RS-232, much longer for RS-485 / RS-422 builds. What testing and quality checks are performed?

100% continuity test per conductor — every wire is verified end-to-end with the correct cross-pin mapping. Insulation resistance test (≥ 100 MΩ at 500 VDC), pin-to-shell isolation test, and a 500 VAC / 60-second hi-pot withstand check. Shielding continuity verified end-to-end with a milliohm meter.
