What is IDC mass-termination and why is it used here?

IDC stands for Insulation-Displacement Connector. Instead of stripping each conductor and soldering it, the connector's contacts pierce through the insulation and grip the copper directly when the connector is pressed onto the ribbon. This gives you (1) extreme consistency — all 16 contacts terminate in one press, no soldering errors; (2) fast assembly time — seconds vs. minutes per cable; (3) gas-tight contacts that resist oxidation. It's the standard termination for board-to-board, equipment-to-equipment communication buses.
